About Ballycuggeran

Ballycuggeran bathing area is sandy and extends approximately 80m along the shoreline of Lough Derg Special Protection Area. The shoreline in the vicinity of the bathing area is fringed with swamp vegetation. Lough Derg supports a vast variety of birds and fish species. Lough Derg is a popular lake for swimming, sailing and wind surfing. It is also popular for fishing. Ballycuggeran is classified as achieving Excellent Water Quality in 2023 based on the assessment of bacteriological results for the period 2020 to 2023. Ballycuggeran has achieved an Excellent Water Quality rating for the four consecutive years 2020 to 2023. Annual water quality ratings are generally calculated using monitoring results over a four-year period and are assessed against stringent bacterial limits to protect bather health.
